HONOR CORDS are used in many different ways to honor graduating students. The cords are often used to showcase clubs, fraternities, sororities, and, of course, honor students. Many colleges and ROTC programs use the cords to recognize the men and women who have served our country or those who are about to serve as they graduate. Quite often blood banks will use a red honor cord to acknowledge and applaud those seniors who have donated a set number of pints of blood over their high school career. In many cases cords will distinguish scholars who have received honors in math, music, Spanish, French, and several other scholastic disciplines. For a more detailed chart of cord colors and the discipline or group they represent, visit our Honor Cord Color Meanings page.
STOLES or SASHES are another popular way to represent the unity that exists when in a specific group. The stoles come in a wide variety of colors and often , as with the cords , the color has meaning. The stoles can be blank or they can have additional meaning with the addition of words, dates, or artwork which is usually screen-printed but can also be embroidered. The inclusion of stoles adds a great deal of beauty to a ceremony as the stoles are much wider and more vivid due to their satin-like finish. A stole, as well as the above mentioned items, are treasured keepsakes that students or parents will retain for a lifetime.
GRADUATION TASSELS have long been used to adorn the top of the graduate's cap and usually is the same for each person graduating. The color of the strands on the tassel can be up to three colors and normally denotes the school colors when worn by the seniors. The tassels on the faculty caps or tams are often a one color black tassel signifying they are college graduates and part of the faculty. Tassels have a long history stretching back to ancient China and more recently to the Middle East. They were most likely appropriated into academe in England in the Middle Ages.
GRADUATION MEDALS come in various sizes and shapes and metal quality. The awarding of an honor medallion to a student usually distinguishes them as being one of the top students in their class. The awarding of the Valedictorian medal connotes that this student is the top student or the one with the highest grade point average of the entire senior class. The Salutatorian medal signifies that the student receiving this medal has the second best grades for that graduating class.
